Example testimony

I support the Governor's Working Group on Property Tax Over Reliance. I believe that passing the Municipal Partnership Act will bring real relief to my town and the 350 other towns across the Commonwealth.

While the communities of our Commonwealth face many different problems, there is one similar theme: all are being forced to make short term decisions that have a long term, negative effect on our schools, roads, public safety, and on our pocket books.

The provisions of Governor Patrick's Municipal Partnership Act represent opportunities for State government and municipalities to co-operate in order to address these problems and reduce the property tax.

I strongly support this initiative.

Testimony ideas

Below you will find an example testimony; however, we strongly encourage you to offer your own thoughts because your personal experience will be more powerful.

For example:

  • You should try to talk about what is happening in your specific city or town and how it affects you. Were teachers or police or other services recently cut? Is your town considering a Proposition 2 1/2 override?
  • You could look up your town on our map to find exactly how much ending the Telecom Property Tax Exemption will generate for your town and then include that in your letter.
  • You could write about how much your property tax bill has gone up.

Also, if you are a municipal official, be sure to offer your expertise.
